Chained Library at Chetham.
It’s easy to forget that books were amongst the most valuable of commodities. Every letter hand written by a scribe, who suffered greatly for the task. Hell, even the parchment took about a year to transform from sheep/cowskin to a usable writing surface. Some books took years to be completed from the time the were first commissioned. One of the most notable epics, Beowulf survives in exactly 1 extant copy.
Seeing books like these should remind us, in the modern day, that it is absolutely imperative that information remain free and accessible.
